“This Head I Hold”; Electric Guest

I love this song! Even better is that I love what it has to say. There was a time that I could very much relate to these lyrics. I used to be so consumed with things that didn’t matter, my head was so clouded by insecurity and selfishness. I was running from what I truly wanted to be and the person that I ought to be. I tried to make myself happy with things outside of myself when really happiness comes from the inside out.

It’s nice to hear a song that talks about the negativity of superficiality and partying instead of the many songs out there that seem to glorify such things. They speak of materialism and “partying hard” as if it’s all so cool and glamorous and nothing else matters because “we are young and free” blah blah blah.

I suppose the lyrics are up for interpretation, and since I’m no longer that young and certainly not free (I’m 33, married and have 2 children) maybe I’m just a little bitter. But in my humble opinion they are a great description of how many people run from who they are and who they want to be by partaking in a materialistic, drug and alcohol fueled lifestyle. And who can blame them, society seems to place so much importance on what we wear, drive, where we vacation and what the trendy drink is that it becomes difficult to remember what truly matters.

I enjoy a good episode of Sex in the City, but the emphasis on what type of shoes Carrie is wearing (I didn’t know or care who Manolo Blahnik or Jimmy Choo were until I was introduced to them by this show, and to be honest I think I’m worse off) and what the drink of choice the girls are having at the latest Manhattan hot spot begins to make my stomach crawl after a while. I don’t mean to brag, but I was drinking comsos before Carrie was even on television… I guess that explains a lot about why I don’t drink any longer! My point is that I was much younger when I was drinking and hanging out at the latest cool bar/ club, these women are well into their 30s (and now 40s… how much longer can this go on!) and still so self consumed it’s kind of pathetic after a while.

I know this all sounds like very motherly advice, but I am a mother and I’ve had a lot of interesting experiences that have led me to a wonderful emotional place. I want to share some of the thoughts and advice that help me stay that way. I am still working on myself and will be for the rest of my life, but I am very content with where and who I am right now. I know that if I “wanna be free I gotta stop playin’ round and runnin’ from me Cuz all of the plastic products, shows and woes Got my head feelin’ low, no room to grow…”

“This Head I Hold”; Electric Guest

They call me, a little grown up
See, I’m upset because I’ve always been stuck
But I don’t know what it is I’m without
Guess I’m in love with always feeling down
See the problem was I
Was fully consumed
With all of the petty things that I couldn’t do
All of the plastic products, shows and woes
I didn’t ever show, I let it go
So I listen while I’m told
Sit back, don’t think, get high
Take drink, sit back, don’t think
The more I listen the deeper I sink
Oooo
I go higher and I say ooo
Oh ooo I go higher
This head that I hold is so tired
And I say oohh no I go higher
And I said Oohh what’s it gon, what’s it gonna be,
Make me say oohh, what’s it gon, what’s it gonna be
I’m feelin’ so cold, but they won’t, but they won’t
believe
Make me say oh, oh , oh , oh , ohh
So find me stuck in some scene
I wanna get out but there’s no in between
So I sit back as I watch the crowd go
Never assuming that it’s something so low
( From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/e/electric-guest-lyrics/this-head-i-hold-lyrics.html )
See the answer is this
If I wanna be free
I gotta stop playin’ round and runnin’ from me
Cuz all of the plastic products, shows and woes
Got my head feelin’ low, no room to grow
So I listen while I’m told
Sit back don’t think get high
Take drink don’t feel just go
If you listen carefully then you won’t feel so low
Sit back don’t think the more I listen the deeper I
sink
Ooooo I got higher and I say oh oo I go higher
This head that I hold is so tired
And I say oh, no, I go higher,
And I say oh, what’s it gon, what’s it gonna be
Make me so oh what’s it gon what’s it gonna be
I’m feeling so cold but they won’t, but they won’t
believe
Make me so oh, oh , oh, oh, oh!

I say oh I go higher!
And I say oh,oohh oh I go higher
Get no sleep feed the empire
And I say oh, no I go higher
And I say oh I go higher
And I say oh, oh oh I go higher
This head that I hold is so tired,
And I say no go higher

  1. I love this song! I want to hug you. I would never describe you as selfish. I am proud of all your accomplishments and your honesty.

    • Well… selfishness is good as long as it’s healthy and beneficial to everyone involved. I mean we’re all selfish right? Just in different ways. Like helping people is selfish because it makes you feel good to help someone else… anyway… that’s a whole other post! Thanks for reading and supporting my blog. 🙂 Love you mom!
